This includes acquiring the full site footprint so we can remove delays, deliver the car park, and plan the precinct properly for the future.

The State Government will take the lead on delivering the Weinam Creek precinct so we can get on with building the car park and planning the area properly for the future.

To do this, the State will take responsibility for the full precinct footprint, including acquiring the land, so it can be managed and delivered in a coordinated way.

This removes ongoing delays and provides certainty, allowing us to deliver the multi-level car park while also setting the precinct up for a well-planned mix of transport, residential and supporting services over time.

This is about getting the foundations right. Delivering the infrastructure the community needs now, while planning properly for the future

FAQ's

Why is the State Government stepping in?

The community has waited long enough. The State is stepping in to take responsibility for the Weinam Creek precinct so we can remove delays, deliver the car park, and plan the area properly for the future.

What does this mean in practice?

It means the State will bring a 5.5ha footprint in the PDA precinct under one coordinated plan.

This includes acquiring the land so:

  • the car park can be delivered without delay
  • access, traffic and parking can be properly planned
  • the precinct can be developed in a logical, integrated way over time

Why acquire the whole site, not just the car park land?

Because the car park doesn’t sit in isolation.

Managing the full site allows us to:

  • plan movement and access properly
  • avoid fragmented decisions
  • ensure the precinct works as a connected transport hub

What does “compulsory acquisition” mean?

It is a standard process that allows the State to acquire land needed for public infrastructure and coordinated planning.

This ensures there is certainty and a clear pathway to delivery.

Will this speed up the car park?

Yes, this removes ongoing delays and allows the State to get on with building the multi-level car park.

What happens to parking during construction?

We know this is a key concern. Work is already underway to:

  • undertake a full audit of current parking
  • identify temporary and overflow options
  • work with operators on practical arrangements

The focus is to maintain access while construction is underway.

Will there be fewer car parks during construction?

There may be changes during construction. However, the priority is to:

  • minimise disruption
  • provide alternative options where possible
  • deliver significantly more capacity long-term

Why do some cars stay parked longer?

Many island residents:

  • leave a car on the mainland
  • return to the islands
  • come back later to use that vehicle

This means some parking currently operates more like longer-term storage rather than high-turnover commuter parking.

Is the multi-level car park enough for future growth?

The car park:

  • addresses current demand
  • significantly increases capacity
  • is planned with future growth in mind, including the ability to adapt over time

It is the foundation, not the final step.

What happens to the rest of the precinct?

Bringing the full site together allows for a well-planned precinct over time, including:

  • residential opportunities
  • retail and services
  • better integration of transport

How does this help Redland Bay residents?

  • reduces pressure on surrounding streets
  • provides dedicated parking for ferry users
  • improves how the area functions overall

How does this help island residents?

  • improves access to mainland transport
  • provides more reliable parking options
  • supports real island travel patterns

What happens next?

  • site planning and acquisition process
  • parking audit and interim solutions
  • construction of the multi-level car park
